Video Compressor

Shrink a video by dropping the resolution or the quality. Runs in your browser, nothing is uploaded.

Everything runs in your browser. Your video is never uploaded, and nothing is stored.

How to use it

Drop a video onto the box, or tap it to pick one. Resolution is where the real saving is. Going from 1080p to 720p cuts the size by more than half on its own and also finishes far quicker. 480p is fine for anything that will only be watched on a phone. Quality controls how hard the encoder squeezes each frame. Medium is a good default. Small is visibly softer but tiny. High is close to the original and barely shrinks anything. This is slower than the other tools here because every frame is re-encoded. A short clip takes under a minute, a long one can take several. The bar shows how far through it is. The first run downloads a 31 MB engine. That happens once and is then cached.

Questions

Is my video uploaded anywhere?

No. The encoding happens inside your browser using a WebAssembly build of ffmpeg. The file never leaves your device, which is why there is no size limit and no sign-up.

Why is it so much slower than the other tools?

Compressing a video means decoding and re-encoding every single frame, which is real work. The other tools mostly copy streams around, which is why they feel instant.

What settings should I use?

720p at Medium covers almost everything. Drop to 480p if the video is only going to be watched on a phone, and only pick High if the footage is going somewhere it will be looked at closely.

How much smaller will it get?

A 1080p phone recording usually drops by 70 to 90 percent at 720p Medium. Footage that is already compressed hard will shrink far less.

Can I compress a very long video?

It will work, but everything is held in memory and every frame has to be encoded. Anything past a few minutes is better cut down first, and a phone will struggle sooner than a laptop.
