Video Converter
Convert a video to MP4, WebM or GIF. Runs in your browser, nothing is uploaded.
Everything runs in your browser. Your video is never uploaded, and nothing is stored.
How to use it
Drop a video onto the box, or tap it to pick one. MOV, AVI, MKV and most other common files are accepted. MP4 is what you want almost every time. It plays everywhere and encodes the fastest of the three. WebM is smaller for the web but the encoder is slow here, so a clip that takes one minute as MP4 can take four as WebM. Only pick it if something specifically needs WebM. GIF drops to twelve frames a second at 480 pixels wide, because a full size GIF would be enormous. Keep the clip under ten seconds or the file gets out of hand. Every frame is re-encoded, so this takes real time. The bar shows how far through it is.
Questions
Is my video uploaded anywhere?
No. The converting happens inside your browser using a WebAssembly build of ffmpeg. The file never leaves your device, which is why there is no size limit and no sign-up.
Why is WebM so much slower than MP4?
The VP8 encoder is far heavier than H.264 to begin with, and in a browser it only gets one CPU core to work with. The difference is three to four times.
Why is my GIF still huge?
GIF stores every frame as its own image with no compression between them. Twelve frames a second at 480 wide is already a compromise. Shorten the clip if the file is still too big.
Which formats can I put in?
MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV, AVI and most other common containers. The output is limited to MP4, WebM and GIF, since those are the encoders available in the browser.
Does it lose quality?
A little. Converting means re-encoding, which always costs something, though at these settings it is hard to see on MP4.
